Will Gauguin Come South draws on the imagined correspondence between Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, reinterpreting a moment of anticipation and hope through a contemporary, vividly coloured lens. The painting reflects Van Gogh’s longing for artistic companionship in the South of France—an emotional and creative yearning translated here into a heightened, dreamlike landscape.

An enclosed space opens onto an expansive, otherworldly exterior, where bold gradients of pink, violet, and deep blue suggest the passage from day into night. Vertical tree-like forms and simplified cacti punctuate the space, while a glowing Harvest Moon hovers low against a dark horizon. The geometry of the architecture frames the scene, creating a threshold between inner reflection and outward projection.

The composition carries a quiet sense of waiting. Forms appear both grounded and suspended, as if held in a moment before something arrives.
